Was appointed Overseer of the Indigo Culture in Java in 1843. Subsequently he filled some administrative offices in the same island, and was appointed Administrator of the Tinmines at Soengei Liat (Banka) in 1863. He accompanied Teysmann on some of his tours in the latter island in 1869. In 1878 he was appointed Assistant Resident of Sambas (NW. Borneo); retired in 1886. Xylopia tooropiana Scheff., discovered by Teysmann, was named after him cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936). |
