career:

Came to Java in 1830 as Gardener of Governor General van den Bosch. From 1831-69 he was Curator of the Buitenzorg Botanic Gardens which he succeeded in keeping going notwithstanding numerous difficulties. In 1858 he was appointed Honorary Inspector of Cultures, which office he still filled after his retirement as Curator in 1869. During his long term of office he made very important botanical explorations, in later years along with his valuable work in the interest of crop plants. It was stipulated that he was never to stay away on a tour for more than 6 months, as it was well-known that his zeal was without limits.

He is the author of botanically interesting reports on his numerous tours, and published besides many papers on useful plants, for the greater part in Natuurkundig Tijdschr. Ned. Indië.

He is commemorated in the genus Teysmannia Rchb.f. & Zoll. and in several plant species. His name was given too to the periodical ‘Teysmannia’ (1890-1922), since 1925 incorporated in ‘De Indische Culturen-Teysmannia’.

He himself always spelt his name with ‘ij’ and not with ‘y’ (see A.J.G.H. Kostermans, New and critical Malaysian Plants III, Djawatan Kehutanan Indonesia. Bagian Planologi Feb. 1955, p. 29-31).

R. Bonaparte mentions²⁰ that Teysmann was in 1877 in Misoöl (o/b the ‘Tagal’). From the literature cited by B. it is evident that the voyage of the ‘Tagal’ took place in July 1877, Teysmann is not mentioned, however, and besides at that time stayed in Celebes! So this statement must be based upon an error.

Teysmann specimens are cited besides from Sumatra East Coast, P. Merak (Strait Sunda), Wijnkoops Bay, and Kawah Tjiwedeh with Telaga Patengan in W. Java, P. Pandjang (Bay of Batavia), Bawean, and Waigeo. No dates are known to the author.

Herb. Bog. [BO]: several thousands of numbers in the H.B. series incl. from Celebes in 1877, 1800 nos. To his own disappointment his New Guinea voyage (1871) yielded the smallest amount of plants, viz 133 species, due to the fact that the commander of the ‘Dassoon’ did hardly give him the opportunity to do any exploration work at all. During his last tours, he already nearing the age of seventy and his health being on the decline, most plants were collected by his Indonesian collectors.

Teysmann sent several Sumatra plants to Leiden [L], which were brought to Utrecht [U] by Miquel. The latter described several new species on this material in the Supplement of his Flora. The type specimens are not in the Buitenzorg Herbarium, though material of the same numbers evidently is present (judging from locality, vernacular name and the like).

He brought home numerous living plants for Hort. Bog. In 1858 several were dispatched to Hort. Leiden.²¹
