Born: 1886, St Leonards in the West-Country, England. Died: 1926, London, England.

career:

Major in the British Army, amateur entomologist-ornithologist-mammologist; Curator of the Sarawak Museum, 1905-15, and founder of the Sarawak Museum Journal in 1911; joining his regiment from 1915-16 serving in India, coming to Singapore serving as staff officer until 1919. In July 1919 he was appointed Director of the Raffles Museum and Library, Singapore, resigning in 1923, to return to Sarawak as Chief Secretary of the Government, etc. He took his D.Sc. (Oxon.) in 1924. According to the obituary, he visited Borneo twice while in charge of the Raffles Museum.

Besides the below-mentioned papers, he published on Borneo birds in the Sarawak Gazette, 1913-14.

The genus Moultonianthus Merr. and many species of plants were named after him.

NW. Borneo, Sarawak. 1909. Banting and Simanggang Distr. (May); Lawas Distr. (Aug.-Sept.); Mt Penrissen (end of Nov.).¹-1910. Up the Limbang River, in an endeavour to reach Mt Batu Lawi (March-Apr.); short excursions to Bintulu and the Samarahan Distr. (10 days each); Mt Matang, Santubong and Upper Sarawak (day or 2 each).-1911. Expedition to Mt Batu Lawi on the headwaters of the Limbang River:² leaving Kuching (May 2), Limbang (5), up-river journey from Bidang (7-16), reaching upper waters of the Madihit (l7), overland journey, climbing Mt Turan, Mt Derian, Mt ? Selinguid; Batu Lawi (29-30), reaching 600 ft below the summit; Kalabit (June 3); the Dayak collectors returning down the Mahidit and Limbang River; Moulton to the Seridan River behind the Molu Range, down the Mago River, across country to a tributary of the Apoh and down into the main Baram River (15), spending a month at Claudetown; Kuching (July 17). Mt Klingkang at the head of the Simunjan River (Oct.); Mt Matang, Santubong and Satang-1912. Fortnight on Mt Serambu (Jan.).-1913. Mt Poi (Apr. 15-20; also on the summit, G. Rumput);³ Expedition to Mt Kinabalu (Br. N. Borneo) via Tampassuk Road, Kiau (Aug. 8-Oct. 16),⁴ reaching the summit Aug. 25, staying 6 weeks on the mountain at different altitudes, making camp near the summit (Pakka camp) (5 days), at Kamborangah (5 days), Lobong (Sept. 3, staying a week), at the entrance of the Minitindok Gorge, exploring the NW. spur (Marei Parii), and returning to Kiau, etc.-1914. Headwaters of the Sadong River and Mt Merinjak, return journey across the foot of Nit Penrissen and down the Sarawak River.⁵ Upper Baram River, reaching the first Kalabit village at the head of the Akar River, but having to return on Nov. 19; staying 11 days on Nit Merinjak on the Dutch border.-1920. 2nd Attempt to reach the Kalabit Country (Oct.), which neither met with success, and the expedition soon returned;⁶ according to Mjöberg he was about Liomatu and on the mountains to the north of it.

On G. Lingga, situated 4 miles from the sea and 100 from Kuching, he had collecting done at 2-3000 ft by 2 Dyak collectors.
