Came from the Botanic Gardens, Glasgow, in 1901 to Kew Gardens as a Student Gardener; in 1903 subkeeper in the Arboretum; left for the Malay Peninsula in 1906 as Superintendent at Batu Tiga, Selangor Rubber Centres; in charge of the Hill Garden, Taiping, 1907; Assistant Singapore Botanic Gardens, Apr. 1908-May 1910; subsequently on a rubber estate once more. He returned to England in 1920; employed as Estates Bailiff Tregenna Park Hotel St Ives, Cornwall from 1922-31; in charge of Finsbury Borough Parks etc., London, from 1935. |

He collected in the Malay Peninsula; in Herb. Sing. [SING]; Herb. Perak Mus.: 66 nos (pres. 1906), incorporated in Singapore now [SING]. |
