Born: 1838, Cambridge, England. Died: 1922, Guildford, SW of London, England.

 

career:

Chaplain in Malacca, 1868-73; in Singapore, 1874-81; Bishop of Singapore, Labuan, and Sarawak, 1881-1908. He retired from the East early in 1908.

One of the founders and first President of the Straits Branch of the Roy. Asiatic Society in 1877; author of many papers on ferns.1

The genus Hosea Ridl. and many plant species were named in his honour.

 

Collecting localities:

In various parts of the Malay Peninsula,2 e.g. Prov. Wellesley (1894), Port Swettenham (Febr. 1904), about Taiping (March 1904).-In NW. Borneo, Sarawak: on Mt Matang (before 1886), on Mt Dulit with Ch. Hose (1894-95),3 and in other places in Sarawak District.

 

collections:

Specially ferns, grasses and sedges.4 The collector’s own set was destroyed by white ants during his absence of leave, but a complete set is in Herb. Sing. [SING]. He distributed duplicates to various herbaria, e.g. Kew [K]: from Borneo and Malaya, 1886-95, 279 nos; Herb. Calcutta [CAL]: specimens of Malay ferns (pres. 1879-80); Herb. Sarawak [SAR]: 72 ferns etc. (pres. 1901 and earlier), 29 + 19 Cyperaceae (coll. with Miss G. Hose, pres. 1903/04) and 29 + 19 Graminae (ditto).

In 1940 his daughter Gertrud had a ‘large’ collection of (living?) ferns from Borneo and Malaya, made by her father, which she presented to the Botanic Gardens at Edinburgh [E] (C.F. Cowan in litt. Feb. 12, 1968).
