Born: 1857, Warbleton, Sussex, England. Died: 1901, Natal, S. Africa.

career:

Surgeon and naturalist, Director of the Raffles Museum, Singapore; 1891-93 Medical Officer of the Sarawak Government, and 1893-95 Curator (possibly acting already in 1892) of the Govt Museum at Kuching, Sarawak. In 1895 he returned to England, worked for some time at Kew Herbarium, went to S. Africa and in 1901 was missing after a bicycle trip in Natal.

Several plants were named after him.

1889. Borneo (Jan.).-1890. Malay Peninsula: Pahang, at Pekan, mouth of the Pahang River, etc.-1891-95. NW. Borneo, Sarawak: Kuching, Mt Braang, ? Mt Penrissen, Limbang, Ulu Tawaran, Rejang (Sibu), Mt Lambia with Ch. Hose (May 21, 1895) and Br. N. Borneo: Mt Kinabalu with his brother H.A. Haviland (March-Apr. 1892).¹

According to Mr Holttum the ferns are in Herb. Brit. Mus. [BM] and partly in Kew [K].³ Dupl. from N. Borneo (1891-95) in Herb. Edinb. [E].

From time to time he employed native collectors, so we occasionally met plants collected by ‘Haviland’s collector’, Haviland & Garaman, & Garai, & Ulak; also by Sitam. He collected together with Ch. Hose (see there) too.

Part of the collections was identified,⁴ but there remain several important indeterminatae. The biography in Kew Bulletin l.c. below gives details on the cumbrous system of cyphers used for the earlier collections!
