Employed in the Agricultural Department of the Malay Peninsula, 1900-1912 .In 1903 put in charge of a small garden in Malaya, which was abolished in 1906; planter in Johore, attacked by his coolies in 1908 and wounded one in defence, which caused his getting into trouble with the law; he subsequently left the Malay Peninsula and ran an estate in Sumatra; in 1911 he caught encephalitis and could never walk again, and hardly write or speak intelligibly (Ridley in litt.). |
