Born: 1901, Utrecht, Holland.

 

career:

Botanist, educated at Utrecht University, where he took his Ph.Dr’s degree in 1927; towards the end of the latter year he went to Java as Assistant at the Buitenzorg Herbarium; high official for the organization of the ‘Flora Malesiana’; since Aug. 1946 stationed in Holland. From Dec. 1949-Nov. 1950 he stayed at Bogor once more. Since 1950 Director of Flora Malesiana Foundation. In 1951 he was appointed Professor of Tropical Botany and Plant Geography on behalf of the Tropical Institute in Amsterdam; in 1953 also at Leiden.

In 1959 he was awarded a honorary Dr’s degree at the University de Montreal. From 1962-72 Director of the Rijksherbarium, Leiden.

He is the author of many taxonomic, plantgeographical, and other papers, relating to the flora of Malaysia.1

J.J. Smith named some orchids after him, and he is commemorated besides in Eurya steenisii de Wit.

The genus Steenisia Bakh.f. was named after him.
