career:

Botanist of a Spanish expedition round the world (see below), partly accompanied by Haenke and Pineda. In 1784 he founded a Botanical Garden at Pamplona (Spain). For additional information and a correction cf. sub Haenke.

Author of some small botanical papers.1

He is commemorated ín the genus Neea Ruiz & Pavon.

 

Collecting localities:

Malaspina’ Expedition, 1789-94.2 Leaving Cadiz (July 30, 1789) for America, exploring part of it; sailing (Dec. 1791) via the Marianas to the Philippines: Luzon (March-Dec. 1792) (detailed itiner. cf. sub Haenke); 2nd stay in America; returning in Spain in Sept. 1794.

Herb. Bot. Gard. Madrid [MA]: 10.000 nos, no duplicates distributed.3 His drawings and MSS are at Madrid too.4 Ferns in Herb. Cavanilles (Madrid [MA]).5

Four thousand of the collected specimens were considered new. Much of the collection of Née at Madrid still remains unidentified. A few species were described from his Philippine material by Cavanilles and still fewer by Lagasca and by himself.6 Several of the localities mentioned on the labels are false.7

According to Mr A.H.G. Alston (in litt.) Née’s collection in Madrid is arranged geographically and contains over 1000 Philippine specimens.
