This catalogue lists ca. 6200 accessions representing more than 1500 species in cultivation in the greenhouses of the Botanical Garden (Hortus Botanicus) of Leiden University since 1954. The large majority is also preserved in the spirit and/or herbarium collections of the Leiden branch of the National Herbarium. Information is provided on provenance and flowering months in the garden. Introductory chapters outline the long history of orchid cultivation and research at the Hortus Botanicus. Hardy orchid species have been in cultivation here since 1594, while tropical species were already present as early as 1740. Several of the photographs are of type specimens. [sample plates] |
