Son of Prof. Hugo de Vries, physician, educated at Amsterdam University. He took his M.Dr’s degree at Zürich (Switzerland) in 1909; from 1913-25 Lecturer in Neurology at Leiden; from 1925-29 and 1930-32 Professor of Neurology of the Peking University Medical College, Peiping, and from 1929-30 acting Director of the Central Institute for Brain Research at Amsterdam. Since 1932 he set up as a private mental specialist at Soerabaja, E. Java; after World War II he settled at Bandoeng, in the employ of the Juliana Hospital. He devoted his spare time to the collecting and study of ferns. |

Ferns in private Herbarium (presumed a total loss now); a few duplicates in Herb. Bog. [BO], 1 in Herb. Pasoer. [PAS now in BO], and several in Herb. Posthumus (still at Buitenzorg). In China he also collected ferns; in E. Java he discovered many ferns new for the island, incl. Egenolfia bipinnatifida and Pteris geminata. |
