career:

Forest Officer, in 1924 appointed in the employ of the D.E. Indian Forest Service. After some years in the teak districts of Java,¹ he was transferred to South Sumatra, respectively stationed at Palembang, Kepahiang, and Lahat. From 1933-37 he was in charge of the forests of the Lesser Sunda Islands, stationed at Singaradja in Bali; subsequently in the Head Office (Buitenzorg), and later in charge of the forests of Buitenzorg Residency. After the war he was evacuated to Holland, and pensioned off. At present employed by the Dutch Government on behalf of nature preservation.

Author of sylvicultural papers in ‘Tectona’, and of numerous enthusiastic reports on his trips in ‘De Tropische Natuur’ (see below).

Dendrochilum devoogdii J.J.Sm. was named after him (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936).
