(Source: Flora Malesiana ser. 1, 1: Cyclopaedia of collectors)

Born: 1850, Cape of Good Hope, S. Africa. Died: 1929, Exeter, England.

career:

Travelled for several years, and returned to Chelsea in the spring of 1878; in 1880 he left for Exeter, entering the horticultural firm of Robert Veitch and Son. In 1916 he was awarded the Victorian Medal of Honour.

Collecting localities:1

He left England for Sydney in 1875 and collected in Fiji, New Zealand, the South Sea Islands and Australia; in Aug. 1877 he was making his way to New Guinea, but was shipwrecked off the N. coast of Australia; he was instructed to join F.W. Burbidge in Borneo, started for that island, stopping in Penang, Sumatra and Singapore en route, and arrived in Labuan in Nov. of the same year. He accompanied Burbidge (see there) on several excursions to the mainland of N. Borneo (Mt Kinabalu) and adjacent islands; in spring 1878 he returned to England.

collections:

When going homeward he brought his plants from Borneo. They are probably at Kew [K] and in the Herb. Brit. Mus. [BM]. In the published accessions of those herbaria only plants from S. Africa (pres. 1884) are recorded, but probably they were presented by the firm of H.J. Veitch (see there). On two occasions his collections were lost.
