Born: 1894, Toeban, E. Java. Died: April 21, 1951, after an accident, Bandung, Java.

career:

Entomologist who got his education at Amsterdam University; he was appointed teacher in Natural History at Amsterdam in 1923, took his Ph.Dr’s degree in 1930,¹ and subsequently went to Java, where he was attached to several secondary schools, viz at Bandoeng, and Batavia; in 1946 Lecturer of Zoology in the University of Indonesia; in 1948 on leave in Holland; in 1949 Professor at Bandoeng.

In 1921/22 he was leader of the zoological-botanical section of a scientific expedition to Boeroe. The latter was executed under the auspices of the Roy. Dutch Geogr. Society and the Treub Society, supported by the Indian Committee for Scientific Researches. It aimed at performing subsequent researches to Rutten’s geological investigations in that island, by the geologist Henny; Toxopeus was to make the botanical and zoological collections. They were assisted by Mr and Mrs Estrin (Russians) and two mantris of the Buitenzorg Botanic Gardens.²

In 1938/39 he joined the 3rd Archbold Expedition to Dutch New Guinea (cf. sub Brass), making exclusively zoological collections.³

He is the author of several entomological papers. J.J. Smith named some plants after him (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936).

Boeroe Expedition, 1921-22.² On the way to the Moluccas collecting at Narmada, Lombok (Jan. 30, 1921); Moluccas, Boeroe: Leksoela (on the S. coast) and environs (Febr. 7-March 15, 1921); to Tifoe, Mnges’ Waen, Wa’Katin (= Wakatin) and by way of the Ehoe Road back to Leksoela (March 16-27); stay at Leksoela (March 27-Apr. 10); via Wa’Katin and Wai Eno to Lake Rana (arriving the 26th); Nal(‘)besi station (Apr. 26-July 17), from where visiting Koentoeroen (July 7-11); on account of ill health sailing (18) for Ambon; back at Leksoela (Aug. 12) and start of operations at Fakal (only kampong situated above 3400 ft!) and Ehoe; after a short stay returning to the coast; 3-week trip through E. Boeroe (Babiroesa; Sept.-Oct.); an infection caused by Microthrombidium made exploration impossible for some weeks; tours in the environs of Mefa (early in Nov.; also visited from Sept. 6-7); departing for Ambon, from where he intended to join a New Guinea expedition; as the latter plan fell through he returned to Boeroe, collecting near the coast till the end of Jan. 1922; Jan. 28 via Tifoe and Wai Eno to Wa’Temum, proceeding to Koentoeroen and visiting Lake Rana a few times more. A month later he was filming at En’biloro and having twice made the ascent of Fat’koton at Fakal he finally moved down to the coast.-After return to Java (April) visiting in W. Java: Tjibodas (May 27-June 8, 1922); Sumatra East Coast (1922): Langkat, Kepala Roessa near Bandjai, and Sibolangit.-S. Sumatra, Lampong Districts: G. Tanggamoes (July and Sept. 1934); SW. Celebes: near Todjamboe (June-July 1936).
