Studied geology at Karlsruhe and Bonn, taking his Ph.Dr’s degree in the latter university in 1914. After having been employed as war-geologist from 1914-18, and subsequently in various geological institutions at Bonn, he went to Java towards the end of 1921 in the employ of the Mining Department ofthe D.E.I. Before long he was placed at the disposal of the leader of the Volcanological Service, of which he was in charge himself since 1925. In May 1940 he was interned on account of his German nationality and Nazi sympathies, and was later transported to Br. India. |
