Roebelen, Carl

Born: 1855, Geisslingen, Würtemberg, Germany.
Died: Jan. 6, 1927, on the way from Wien Chan in the direction of Chieng Kwang, N. Siam.

career:

Served his horticultural apprenticeship in the Royal Garden of the King of Würtemberg at Friedrichshafen, later working in several gardens in foreign countries. Spring 1880 he entered the employ of Messrs Sander & Sons, St Albans, which firm sent him to the Philippines;¹ about 1882 he left Sander’s and worked for the remainder of his life (except for a brief period in 1884) for his own account. About 1886 he made Bangkok his headquarters, but continued to travel in Siam and neighbouring countries. During the war 1914-18, he was interned in India; at the end he went to Switzerland and remained there till he was allowed to return to Siam in 1924.

Some orchids were named after him.

Collecting localities:

c. 1880-82. Philippines, in Sander’s employ; possibly spending the next years too in that Archipelago.-After 1884 he visited Borneo, Sumatra, and Java, many small islands, Burma and Cochin-China.

According to Kerr² probably no dried collections made. He collected many orchids, all of which were sent to London to be sold by auction; no exact localities of his finds are known; diaries, manuscripts, etc. are lost. Herbarium specimens probably made from living plants.
