Born: 1907, The Hague, Holland.

 

career:

Was educated at the Agricultural College, Wageningen; since 1934 Forest Officer in the employ of the D.E. Indian Forest Service, at first stationed at Lahat, Benkoelen (S. Sumatra) and since the end of 1937 at Tjepoe (teak distr., Centr. Java). After World War 11 (P.O.W. in Siam) he was evacuated to Holland, and returned to Java in 1947, where he was stationed at Banjoewangi and elsewhere in E. Java. Early 1954 appointed Head of the Forestry Division of the Dept of Agriculture at Hollandia, N. New Guinea. In July 1957 he repatriated, and settled in The Hague.

Author of some papers dealing with the vegetation of Benkoelen;1 excellent amateur photographer. Author of a paper on New Guinea.2

Dendrobium rappardii J.J.Sm. was named after him.

 

Collecting localities:

S. Sumatra, Benkoelen. 1935. P. Enggano (June 16-21), making trip along the N. coast, crossing the island from N to S (Abeha). Slopes of G. Pesagi and kp. Oedjoeng (July 20-21); trip along and crossing the southern part of the Game Reserve ‘Zuid Sumatra I’, visiting Semangka Valley and Soeoh Plain (Sept.); G. Seminoeng (Dec. 19-20).-1936. Belirang-Sekintjau Mts (Aug. 12); Kroë, Soekaradja, Way Tenong, Oeloe Danau (Kaoer), etc.; Doesoen Besar (Sept.). -1937. Ketahoen River; Upper Seblat region in Lebong.-E. Java: G. Kawi-Boetak (Oct. 1-2, 1941).-E. Java (1947 →).-1948-49. E. Java: Besoeki Res., e.g. on G. Ringgit and G. Baloeran.-1950. Nusa Barung, S of E. Java (March 11 with Mochtarno; 13).-1955. W. New Guinea. End of Oct. he made a tour in the Wissel Lake region, making a small collection on heathland between Enarotali Plain and Jahwei River.

Herb. Bog. [BO]; the numbers ofthe older collections with accessory letters, e.g. S for plants from G. Seminoeng, K for Kaba (Kelam), P. for G. Pesagi, DB for Doesoen Besar; since 1937 with numbers only, viz nos 138-217 (coll. till 1942). He collected 40 nos on G. Kawi. Herb. For. Res. Inst. Buitenzorg [BZF]: Benkoelen (Sumatra) plants (coll. 1935-36), numbered in the bb. series (cf. sub Forest Research Inst.), and from P. Enggano. The above-mentioned collections (1948-1949) in Herb. Wageningen [WAG]. Besides plants he made large collections of Aphidae in Java and New Guinea. In Herb. Wageningen [WAG]: 7 plants from G. Idjen and some from SE. Baluran etc., E. Java.

Nos 173-226 from Nusa Barung. Occasionally he contributed in total c. 200 numbers to the B.W. series (cf. sub Boswezen Nieuw Guinea).
