Gardener of the Botanic Garden at Genoa, who worked for some time under the direction of Penzig in preparation for his voyage to the D.E.I. He evidently was a peculiar man; Fairchild gives some particulars1 on Mr Rapps, as he erroneously names him; the statement that he disappeared during the Nias expedition does not hold true. Homalomena raapii Engl. and other plants were named after him. |

Herb. Bot. Mus. Genoa [GE]. The large collection from W. Java (in Herb. Genoa) was partly identified by H. Hallier f. In Herb. Bog. [BO]: 570 nos dupl. Batoe Islands; Herb. Berl. [B]: 8 portfolios with herbarium from Java and Sumatra (pres. by Prof. Knuth in 1932/33); also dupl. in Herb. Leiden [L].4 Living orchids from P. Tello in Hort. Bog. Is cited to have collected lichens and mosses in Columbia in 1904 (cf. Urban, Gesch. Kön. Bot. Gart. Mus. Berl.-Dahl. 1916, p. 289, 311). In literature more than once the year 1894 is mentioned as the year of collecting. This must be based on an error, possibly part of the collection (duplicates ? ) was mislabelled. It is not sure whether any plants were collected in Nias; the ethnological objects depicted in his paper on that island, are in the Municipal Museum at Braunschweig. |
