career:

Educated at Jena; from 1873-83 farmer in Natal and Orange Free State, S. Africa; exploring the Limpopo region (1882) and Ulanga (1885-86); from 1887-89 Director of the Bismarck Archipelago;¹ study tour to the Dutch East Indies, 1889; visit to German SW. Africa in 1892; visits to Morocco in 1897, 1899 and 1901; to the U.S.A. and Mexico in 1904, and to German and English E. Africa in 1905; teacher at the French gymnasium at Berlin, 1917-20.

Collecting localities:

Former Kaiser- Wilhelmsland, NE. New Guinea. Arriving at Finschhafen (Dec. 22, 1887); with C. Hunstein setting out (Dec. 28) to Festungs Cape, H. returning on account of illness; excursion in the valley of the Bu Porum and returning afoot to Finschhafen.²-Bismarck Archipelago. Stationed in Kerawara (1888-89), from where making tours to Neu Mecklenburg (= New Ireland) (May 22-, 1888),³ Neu Hannover (= New Hanover); he evidently climbed the Wuna Koker or Varzinberg in New Britain⁴and Mutter Volcano.⁵
