career:

Probably Pieter van Oort (1804, Utrecht, Holland; Sept. 2, 1834, Padang, Sumatra), was appointed draughtsman of the ‘Natuurkundige Commissie’ (Commission for Natural Sciences) for the D.E.I. in 1825 and accordingly came to Java in 1826. He accompanied members of the said commission on their travels in W. Java (itinerary 1833 cf. sub S. Müller),1 Ambon, to the SW. coast of New Guinea, Timor, and finally (1833-34) in the environs of Padang (Sumatra West Coast). He ascended G. Salak in W. Java (July 22, 1831).

Loranthus oortianus Korth. was named after Pieter van Oort.

Herb. Leiden [L]: Vernonia cymosa Blume var. eupatorioides (Blume) Kosterm. from Tjimahi, Priangan, W. Java.2 The specimen was collected by van Oort and identified by Korthals.
