Born: 1805, Hamburg, Germany. Died: 1868, France.

 

career:

Accompanied Lagrené’s French Embassy to China in 1843, and returned from Canton to France in July 1845. In Jan. 1847 appointed Consular Agent of France at Shanghai, in 1850 promoted to the rank of 2nd Consul, home on leave in July 1853, in Oct. 1855 1st Class Consul, and in July 1858 Consul General at that port. In February he was transferred to Canton, and resigned in August 1862.

He visited Siam and the northern part of China on a diplomatic mission, making zoological and botanical collections. He evidently visited the Malaysian region on several occasions.1

 

Collecting localities:2

Between 1847-55. In Java (3 days in 1847; at Anjer in W. Java, between 1852-54); in Singapore (at least in 1847); possibly in Celebes;1 the Philippines (at least plants coll. 1855).

In a letter of July 1, 1850, he mentions a rapid passage through the islands of Malaysia (‘Océanie Malaise’).3

Herb. Paris [P]: some cases with dried plants, wood samples, seeds, etc. He sent living plants to Paris, including gutta-percha and Nepenthes. In Java he collected zoologically too.
