Meyen, Franz Julius Ferdinand

Born: 1804, Tilsit, F. Prussia, Germany. Died: 1840, Berlin, Germany.

career:

A plant physiologist¹ who originally studied medicine (M.D. in 1826). He served as a surgeon on a German voyage round the world (see below). When back in Europe, he was appointed professor at Berlin.

He is commemorated in the genus Meyenia.

Voyage in the ‘Prinzess Louise’, 1830-32.² Sailing from Hamburg (Sept. 7, 1830); Brazil, Cape Horn, Chili, Peru, China; Philippines, Luzon: bay of Manila at Cavite (Sept. 14, 1831), Manila (15), to St. Matheo (21) and trips in the environs, back to Manila (24), by land via Santa Ana to Pasig (29), by boat to Laguna de Bay and Hali-Hali (30), Isl. Talim (Oct. 1), Mt Sembrano (5), Rio Tabacuano (7) and back to Manila (9); departing (15) to China; passing Sunda Strait; Cape of Good Hope, St Helena; back at Cuxhafen (Apr. 19, 1832).
