Surgeon; major in the Medical corps U.S. Army, 1883-1909; prominent zoologist. He was a member of the Roosevelt South African Expedition. Author of many zoological publications. The genus Mearnsia Merr. and some plant species were named in his honour (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936). |
