career:

Pharmacist, Director of the ‘Schlesische Botanische Tauschverein’, returned in Germany from a voyage to the East Indies, after an absence of three years, in Sept. 1897.¹ A new voyage was planned. He is cited in literature as a collector of plants in the Malay Peninsula. According to Backer he collected in British India in the years 1896-97, but we suspect that most or all of the collecting was done in the Malay Peninsula (cf. also sub J. Mayer and Meyer).

Selaginella mayeri Hier. was named after him (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936).

Collecting localities:

Malay Peninsula:² Singapore (July 1895 etc.), Bt Timah, etc.; for 1896 cf. sub Meyer. He visited Blakan Mati,³ probably one of the small islets near Singapore.

The collections were presented to the ‘Schlesische Bot. Tauschverein’.¹ Herb. Berl. [B]: Plantae ex India extra Gangem 230 nos (pres. 1898). The plants cited from the Malay Peninsula probably at Berlin, at least the plant mentioned by van Ooststroom, bearing the number ‘Schlesische But. Tauschverein 122’. Mez cited the nos 806 and 961.

In Herb. Vienna [W]: 100 Malacca plants from Mayer without initials, probably identical.
