Fleet-surgeon who joined the Royal Naval Medical Service in 1889; he saw a great deal of service in the eastern waters and spent a large part of his spare time in collecting ferns. He retired in 1909, but during the winters of 1911-13 he returned to Malaysia to continue his botanical collecting; in 1912 he visited the Buitenzorg Botanic Gardens. Author of some papers dealing with ferns.1 Aglaia matthewsii Merr. and other plants were named after him. |
