Born: 1872, Häselrieth, Thüringen, Germany.
Died: June 7, 1945, in Japanese prisoner camp near Semarang, Java.

career:

Came as a private soldier to the D.E.I. in 1896; in 1903 he set to work in the employ of the Forest Service; in 1915 he was instructed to lay out a botanical garden at Sibolangit in E. Sumatra (a branch of the Buitenzorg Garden).¹ He retired in 1924, and subsequently got the supervision of the municipal parks at Medan, Sumatra East Coast.

Beside of the below-cited papers, he is the author of some others relating to forestry. Several Malaysian plants were named in his honour.

Herb. Bog. [BO]: Java (lists existing, nos 1-2453; 1501-1700 not used) and Sumatra plants. Of the latter collection a list exists of the nos 3001-11629, of which the nos 10200-10999 were left a blank; on the suggestion of the Head of the Buitenzorg Herbarium this Sumatra collection was numbered from 3000 upwards;⁷ dupl. in Herb. Leiden [L]; Herb. Utrecht [U]: Java nos (1914), and from Sumatra (1917-18); Herb. Univ. Amsterdam [AMD]: Sumatra dupl. with carbon-copied labels.

Sets of dried plants of his were offered for sale by Osw. Weigel; one of them was in Herb. Manila [PNH]: 220 (purch. 1930). He was the owner of a large private herbarium which in January 1942 was brought to the A.V.R.O.S. Experiment Station at Medan; Febr. 1950 it was transferred to Buitenzorg. It was accompanied by a manuscript (not wholly completed) on the flora of Sumatra and Java.

In 1919 he employed the native collector Galoengi (see there).

Living Sumatra plants in Hort. Bog. (pres. 1917).

A new Gentiana was described by Ridley.⁸
