Born: 1871, Oudewater, Z.H., Holland.

career:

Doctor of Law, member of the Wichmann (see there) Expedition to Dutch N. New Guinea in 1903, and subsequently leader of two expeditions to the southern part of that island in 1907, and 1909-10 (itiner., liter. etc. cf. respectively sub G.M. Versteeg and L.S.A.M. von Römer). When returning from Wilhelmina summit in 1909, Lorentz had severe fall; the march back to Alkmaar bivouac was a long tale of misery, extensively dealt with in his book.¹ After return to Holland he passed the exemination for the consular service and subsequently was stationed in S. Africa.

He also wrote an account of the Wichmann Expedition.²

Several plants were named after him.

1909. Dutch S. New Guinea: Wichmann Mts (end of Oct.-Nov. 2); Hubrecht Valley (Nov. 3); Mt Wilhelmina (170 m below the summit, Nov. 8).

Together with Habbema (see there) he collected 7 plants, two of which from the summit of Mt Wilhelmina, on behalf of the botanist von Römer who did not accompany this part of the expedition. In Herb. Bog. [BO] (for dupl. cf. sub L.S.A.M. von Römer); Herb. Leiden [L]: New Guinea Charophyta (coll. 1907).
