Linden, Auguste Charles Joseph

Born: 1850, Luxemburg. Died: 1894, Luxemburg.

 

career:

Son and co-operator of the famous horticulturist J.J. Linden. He served for 10 years as an officer in the Belgian army which he left in 1885, subsequently travelling in the Malay Archipelago (1886), the Congo, and Spain. Some time after his return home he lost an arm, and he was quite an invalid for the last years of his life.

Vanda lindeni Rchb. f. was named after him.

 

Collecting localities:1

1886. Moluccas: Ternate, Batjan, Gilolo (Halmahera), Morotai, and several localities on the coast of New Guinea and the island Sandor (= ? ). Evidently he visited other islands too.

He brought home living orchids, e.g. from the Moluccas.2

Merrill in Enum. Born. Pl. 1921 cites a certain Linden as the collector of some orchids in Borneo; in Enum. Philip. Fl. Pl. 1, p. 420 an orchid from the Philippines is cited.
