Lesson, René Primivère (= P. Lesson)

Born: 1794, Rochefort, France. Died: 1849, Rochefort, France.

 

career:

Elder brother of the former, pharmacist-naturalist (principally zoologist) on Duperrey’s expedition in the ‘Coquille’ (see below). Afterwards he was appointed professor at the Medical College, Rochefort.

Some ferns were named in his honour.

 

Collecting localities:

Voyage in ‘La Coquille’, 1822-25;1 cf. sub J.S.C. Dumont d’Urville, who was in charge of the botany department. Apparently Lesson collected at least in the vicinity of the Bay of Doré in Dutch N. New Guinea, and in Ambon.

Herb. Paris [P]. Duplicates in Herb. Berl. [B] (with Herb. Kunth) and in Herb. Leiden [L]. In Herb. Vienna [W]: New Zealand plants collected by Lesson (without initials). For literature on the plant collections see sub Dumont d’Urville. The zoological results of the expedition were published by Lesson and P. Garnot (1826, 1830), the work is unfinished, however.
