Born: 1884, Leeuwarden, Fr., Holland. Died: 1954, Haarlem, Holland.

 

career:

A zealous lover of nature who was unable to attend college for financial reasons, but nevertheless succeeded in acquiring a considerable knowledge of natural history, especially entomology. From 1911-12 Zoolog-ical Assistant of the Deli Experiment Station (Medan, Sumatra); in 1912 he came to Java as Entomologist in the employ of the H.V.A. (Handelsvereeniging Amsterdam), stationed at Bendo Redjo Estate near Blitar (E. Java); since the end of 1914 on the staff of the Institute for Plant Diseases at Buitenzorg (W. Java), since 1927 chief of the same institution. In 1928 he got a honorary Dr’s degree at Wageningen Agricultural College. He was pensioned off in 1934, returned to Holland, and was appointed Lecturer in Applied Entomo-logy in the University of Amsterdam in 1937.

E. Java: G. Tengger, Tosari and G. Bromo (Apr. 1913 or 1914).1-W. Java: G. Patoeha and Telaga Patengan (March 1916); Soekasari (March 1916).-Sumatra West Coast: G. Singgalang (Apr. 14, 1918.)-Centr. Java: Klaten (Aug. 1922).-1924. SW. Celebes: Makassar, Maros and Bantimoeroeng (Apr.);2 SE. Borneo: Balikpapan (Apr. 14); N. Celebes: Manado (Apr.); Talaud (P. Karakelong) & Sangir (= Sangihe) Islands (P. Sangihe, at Tahoena or Taroena and Petak) (Apr. 23-May 7). - SW. Celebes: Makassar, Maros and Bantimoeroeng (Apr. 1925).2

Besides he collected at Poerworedjo (Kedoe) in Centr. Java and at Lampegan, G. Rosa Estate in W. Java; respectively in 1923 and 1915.

He made an excursion to the Duizendeilanden in the Bay of Batavia, N of W. Java;3 probably no collections were made. He visited Tjibodas (W. Java) many times.
