Born: 1871, Prov. Jamagata, N. Hondo, Japan. Died: 1915, Taihoku, N. Formosa.

 

career:

Since 1901 Botanist of the Government of Formosa.1

Several plants were named after him, e.g. Saccolabium kawakamii J.J.Sm.

 

Collecting localities:

1911. SE. Borneo: Martapoera (Oct. 6); SW. Celebes: Makassar, and prope Maros (Oct.); Centr. Java: Djokja; E. Java: Soerabaja, Pasoeroean (Nov. 3.), Tosari, G. Bromo; Ngempit (or? Kempit) and Kalibatoe (Nov.); W. Java: Buitenzorg, Tjibodas; Tjinjiroean (Dec. 4), Malabar. Plants of Lombock (= ? Lesser Sunda Isls), and the Malay Peninsula: Kuala Lumpur (Batu Cave etc.), Singapore, were collected too.
