An apothecary apprentice who turned to botany in 1831. Since 1837 he was teacher in forest botany, and in later years he made several excursions in Europe. In 1844 he went to Christiania (= Oslo, Norway), and in the next year he accompanied the Danish expedition of the ‘Galathea’ (cf. itiner. etc. sub Didrichsen). He left the expedition on account of his poor health in P. Penang (March 8, 1846), from where he returned to Denmark by way of Bombay and Suez. |

Herb. Copenhagen [C]: plants Galathea Expedition; Herb. Berlin [B]: East India plants (Galathea Exp.); Herb. Univ. Kiel [KIEL]: Java plants; U.S. Nat. Herb. Wash. [US]: 87 dupl. Galathea Expedition. Some of his plants from Sambiliung, the numbers 2661 and 2794, are cited by Mez1 as collected in Borneo. The expedition did not touch Borneo, and the real locality is probably Sambelong, Nicobars. It is almost certain that Kamphøvener has collected no plants at all in Malaysia. The collecting there must have been done by Didrichsen or others. |
