career:

Traveller-ethnologist, son of a cook who came to Berlin from Russia in 1800 and finally became the owner of ‘Hotel Russie’ in that place.

Some plants were named after him.

1857-58. Departing from Hamburg (June 1857), sailing via Sunda Strait to Singapore (voyage of 105 days), from where making excursions to P. Brani (S of Singapore Island) and Bt Tima; by boat (mid-Apr. 1858) to Malacca: Rumbia, and trips to Al(l)or Ga(d)ja(h) and Linggi River; from Singapore (beginning of July) to W. Java: Batavia, Buitenzorg, Gadok, Megamendung, Telaga Warna, Tjipanas, Tjiandjur, Bandung (July 16), Lembang (17), Bandung, Trogon(g), G. Guntur (19), Kawah Manuk (20), Tjisurupan, Tjikadjang, G. Papandajan (crater), Garut, Wanaradja (22), Sumedang, G. Malabar; G. Gedeh, Tjibodas, G. Mandalawangi, G. Pangrango, G. Tangkuban Prahu, G. Tampomas, Lake of Pandjalu, G. Galungung (Aug.), Bandjar; Centr. Java: Tjilatjap, bird’s nest caves at Karangbolang, Tjilatjap, Banjoemas, G. Slamat, Banjumas, Bandjarnegara, Diëng Plateau, Wonosobo, G. Sindoro, Magelang, the Borobudur, Karang-tritis (= ? Parang-tritis), Djokja, Surakarta, G. Lawu, Surakarta, Ambarawa, Semarang; E. Java: Surabaya, Malang, G. Ardjuno, G. Smeru (not reaching the summit), G. Tengger, G. Lamongan (from Klakah), Probolinggo, Plantungan; W. Java: back at Batavia (Dec.).-1859-60. Via Labuan (late in Dec. 1858) to the Philippines. Luzon: from Manila to Bulacan; Laguna Prov., Pasig, Laguna de Bay, Jala-Jala, Calauan, Sta Cruz, Butucan; by sea (end of Aug.) to Albay (on the way staying for some time at Mariveles); Sorsogon, house at Daraga (= Cagsaua) at the foot of G. Mayon; march to G. Bulu-San (the ascent of which failed); S. Camarines: Batu Lake, Buhi Lake, G. Iriga, solf. Igabo, Tibi, Naga, G. Yamtik (Arntik, Hantu); N. Camarines: Paracale etc., along the coast via Quitang and Pasacao; from Naga to G. Isarog (May 1860), G. Iriga and G. Mazaraga (June); Samar: Lauang (July 5), visiting the N., S. and E. coast and the interior; Leyte: G. Kasiboi and Bito Lake.-According to Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936, he visited the Malaysian region again in the years 1873-76 and 1890-93.

(1) F. Jagor: ‘Singapore, Malacca, Java, Reiseskizzen’ (Berlin 1866); ‘Reisen in den Philippinen’ (Berlin 1873, with Appendix on geology and skulls). In geographic names the German ‘u’ is used instead of the Dutch ‘oe’.

(2) Plants of his described in Warburg, Monsunia, 1900.

J. Perkins and others gave an enumeration of some recently collected plants of Jagor, etc. in Fragm. Fl. Philip. 1904, p. 4-66, 77-202.
