Entered the Navy in 1810; in 1841 he was appointed to the ‘North Star’ and employed on the East Indian Station, engaged in the Chinese war; later in New Zealand. He corresponded with Sir W. Hooker and Robert Brown and collected plants which he brought home whenever his duties allowed. Santalum homei Seem. was named in his honour. |

Herb. Brit. Mus. [BM]: 141 plants from the E. coast of China (pres. 1843-44) and 1286 plants from Australia and the Pacific (pres. 1846-53); Herb. Kew [K]: from Australia and New Zealand. According to Forbes1 he collected some plants in Timor (Lesser Sunda Isls) in 1843, during the voyage home from China [BM]. Forbes was right in attributing Timor plants to Home. Cynometra caulilora was collected at Coepang (May 1, 1843). |
