Was reared in the Amsterdam orphanage and probably went to the East as a sailor. When in Tonkin he acquired a large fortune; in 1677 and 1679 Chief of the Dutch East India Company in Japan; in 1687 Governor of Ambon, in 1689 extraordinary member of the Council of lndia (since 1691 member). The genus Dehaasia Blume was named in his honour. |
