Came to the D.E.I. in 1852 and was appointed Officer of the Civil Service in 1855. He was stationed in Sumatra (1855-63)1, Celebes (1863-74; since 1865 Assistant Resident)2 and SE. Borneo (Resident at Bandjermasin from 1874); dismissed in 1877 on account of ill health. Several plants were named after him. |

N.I. 22, 1860, p. 435-442): ‘Korte beschrijving van eene aardharslaag, voorkomende in de divisie Lematang-Oeloe, Res. Palembang’ (l.c. 24, 1862, p. 517-519). (2) G.J. Gersen: ‘Topographische schets van de bergregentschappen der Noorder-districten van Celebes’ (Tijdschr. Ind. Taal-, Land- en Volkenk. 16, 1867, p. 352-376).
