Born: 1887, Chicago, Ill., U.S.A. Died: 1954.

 

career:

Botanist-ecologist who took his Dr’s degree at Michigan University in 1912. From 1912-15 employed in the Philippines,1 as Instructor of Botany. From 1916-19 Professor of Biology at Carthage College; in 1919 Asst Professor, in 1922 Associate Professor, and since 1928 Professor of Botany, Kansas State Agric. College Manhattan, Kans. (U.S.A.).

Many numbers of Gates cited by Merrill in his Enum. Philip. Fl.Pl.; also numbered in the B.S. (cf. Bureau of Science, Manila) series with Otañes. In the years 1912-15 he sent more than 1000 specimens of Philippine plants to the Herb. Manila [PNH] for identification. Herb. Field (= Nat. Hist.) Mus. Chicago [F]: 397 Philip. plants (purch. 1915).
