career:

Filipino who has been associated with the Botanical Garden at Manila, in one or another capacity, since the inception of that institution in 1858, and with the Spanish Forestry Bureau from 1877-98. In May 1900, he entered the American Civil Service as Botanist in the Forestry Bureau,1 and till August 1902, he had charge of all work of botanical nature in that office.2

He is commemorated in Eugenia garciae Merr.

Philippines: Luzon; Mindoro, Palo (May 1903).

His early collections went out under Vidal (see there) labels. In Areneo Municipal Manila: c. 1000 specim.; since 1900 numbered in the F.B. (cf. Forestry Bureau) series, preserved in Herb. Manila [PNH]. In Herb. Vienna [W]: 55 nos (pres. 1891).
