At the age of 15 apprenticed to a pharmacist; later he purchased a business of his own at Oxford. He had a great interest in the local flora and was the writer of various county floras; in 1899 he was awarded the honorary degree of M.A. by the University of Oxford. In 1895 appointed Curator of the Fielding Herbarium, Bot. Gard., Oxford; from 1903 till his death Secretary of the Bot. Soc. and Exchange Club of the British Isles. |

He visited the Malay Peninsula and Singapore in 1908 (cf. Burkill in Gard. Bull. Str. Settlem. 4, 1927, nos 4-5). In the same year he visited India, Ceylon, China, Korea, and Japan. |
