Bosscha, Johannes

Born: 1857, Leiden, Holland. Died: 1940, Merano, Italy.

career:

Studied chemistry, geology, mineralogy and physics, and took his Ph. Dr’s degree at Leiden University in 1879. As a mining expert he was employed in Spain till 1882, and subsequently he was for some years a teacher at Breda (Holland); in 1888 he went to Borneo as a mining expert, founded an agricultural company in Sambas (W. Borneo) in 1893, which, however, soon proved a failure. After conducting mining explorations in the Padang Highlands (Sumatra West Coast), he was appointed acting Estate Manager of the tea and cinchona plantation Malabar (W. Java) in 1901; in 1902 Estate Manager and later Chief Estate Manager of Taloen Estate. He left for Europe in 1920 and settled at Clarens near Montreux.

Dictyopteris labrusca v.A.v.R. var. bosschae v.A.v.R. and some other plants were named after him.
