Born: 1876, Geneva, Switzerland. Died: 1967, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

 

career:

Studied natural history at Geneva (Ph. Dr 1902); Botanical Assistant at Geneva, 1897-1902, subsequently employed there, at Berlin and Leiden (Custodian of the Herbarium, 1903-04); in 1906 appointed Chief of the Botanical Laboratory (Treub Laboratory) at Buitenzorg (Java);1 Director of the Tea Experiment Station (Buitenzorg), 1907-28; finally Director of the D.E.I. Department of Agriculture till June 1933; in the latter year returning to Europe. 

He was active in several international fields, as Nature Preservation and the Red Cross.

 

Collecting localities:

1906-c. 1928. W. Java; he is the discoverer of the grass Iseilema argutum And., new to Java, near Haoergeulis pr. Cheribon.2 Sumatra East Coast (Apr.-May 1913) (probably not collecting) and Sumatra West Coast: Padang Highlands, at Loeboek Sikaping (June) etc.;3 collecting along the Alas road (Atjeh) and on the Karo Plain (East Coast) in 1918; S. Sumatra: Lampong Districts (Oct. 1927).

 

collections:

Herb. Bog. [BO]: principally orchids and saprophytes from Java, some Sumatra plants; 33 glass containers with botanical material in spirit (pres. 1933 by the Tea Exp. Station). Bernard also employed native collectors, specially for tiny saprophytes.

(1) He is the author of many papers on Phalloideae, saprophytes, etc., in Ann. Jard. Bot. Buit., and of: ‘Protococcacées et Desmidiées d’eau douce recoltées a Java’ (Batavia 1908).
