Forest Officer who came to Java in 1878; he worked for some years in Semarang Forestry, at Getas and Kendal; in 1883 in charge of Preanger-Krawang, stationed at Bandoeng. In 1886 he made a tour of inspection to Banka,1 the first planned forest reconnaissance in the Outlying Possessions; he evidently visited Banka more than once. In 1891 he returned to Europe on account of ill health, continued his studies in Germany, and in 1896 was appointed Teacher in Sylviculture (later Professor) at Wageningen College, Holland. He visited Surinam twice, viz in 1903 and 1914; in 1909/10 he travelled in Java, Borneo, and the Malay Peninsula, and in 1920/21 through Java and across Sumatra. He took his Dr's degree magna cum laude at Tübingen1 in Germany in 1909. |

1886. Banka (Aug. 12-22). In a list in the archives of the Leiden Herbarium the following localities are mentioned: G. Mangkol, Sg. Liat, G. Betong, G. Bras, Nangka, Batoeroesak, Bt besar, Kobok, Muntok, Gegas, Djeboes, Air Gegas, Blinjoe, Petar, Limbang, Permis, Pangkal Pinang, S(e)lan, Bt Patoekan, Bt Peting, Roekem, Bt Toboali, Dumes, Sg. Liar, foot G. Rangek, Sg. Pedoekan, and Merawang. Evidently he travelled all over the island. |
