Bennett, George

Born: 1804, Plymouth, England. Died: 1893, Sydney, Australia.

career:

Studied medicine, visited Ceylon in 1819, and was appointed Surgeon of a vessel sent out on an exploring expedition, during which Australia was visited; before the return voyage to England some parts of the Malaysian region and China were touched.¹ In 1836 he finally settled in New South Wales, being in practice at Sydney for many years. At intervals of disengagement from professional duties, he made botanical and zoological excursions in the interior of the Colony of N.S.W., etc.² He took his medical degree at Glasgow in 1859.

Flindersia bennettiana F.Muell., Eupomatia bennettii, and other plants were named after him.

Collecting localities:

Philippines: Luzon, near Cavite (1830); various trips in Australia; sailing from Sydney (March 14, 1833) to W. Java: Batavia (May 21-June l); NE. Sumatra: Pedir Coast (July 1-mid-Aug.); Singapore (Aug. 19-21); China and Macao; Singapore (Nov. 26, arrival), making a trip inland to an estate, to St John’s Isl. and P. Panjang (= Long Isl.); Dec. 15 leaving for England via the Cape.¹
