Dr Sibthorp made his acquaintance in Austria and engaged him as natural history painter in 1784, and during the voyages with the latter (e.g. to Greece) Bauer devoted himself to the study of botany. In 1801 he was appointed Natural History Draughtsman to the expedition of Flinders to Australia. After the breakdown of the ‘Investigator’, he and Dr R. Brown, the botanist of the expedition, stayed in Australia awaiting the return of Flinders. After his return in England (Oct. 1805) he set to work out his sketches made during the voyage. In the beginning of 1813 he made a start with the ‘Illustrationes Florae novae Hollandiae’, which was a failure and after this desillusion he returned to Austria in 1814, taking his collections with him. The genus Bauera Banks was named after him. |
