Educated at Leipsic, where he took his Ph.Dr’s degree in 1871; since 1875 Professor of Plant Physiology and Soil Science at Jena. He made a study tour to Java, leaving Europe in the autumn of 1904 and returning in April 1905.1 |

He visited G. Salak, G. Papandajan, Tjibodas, Depok, all in W. Java (1904), and in Jan. 1905 the island of Noesa Kambangan (S of Centr. Java). |
