Born: ? 1831, Mecklenburg, Germany. Died: 1907, ? Melbourne, Australia.

 

career:

Photographer and excellent collector who went to Australia with Anatole Freiherr von Hügel (see there). He accompanied Reverend G. Brown (see there) of the Wesleyan Mission, on his voyage to the Bismarck Archipelago in 1875, collecting in Neu Lauenburg (= Duke of York Island) and Neu Pommern (= New Britain).1 Later he did a vast amount of botanical collecting in Victoria and south-eastern New South Wales during many years for Baron von Mueller. Finally he suffered from defective eyesight.

He is the author of some papers on Victorian plants.

Prostanthera walteri F. Muell. from Australia was named after him.
