Came to the D.E.I. as a private soldier; later appointed day-labourer in the employ of the Forest Service,1 and finally Market Clerk at Fort de Kock. Author of a paper on Raflesia.2 J.J. Smith named some orchids in his honour (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936). |

He collected many living orchids on behalf of W. Groeneveldt and E.R. Jacobson (see those); several of these orchids were presented to Hort. Bog. They are partly represented in Herb. Bog.
