Teschemacher, James Englebert

(Source: Flora Malesiana ser. 1, 1: Cyclopaedia of collectors)

Born: 1790, Nottingham, England. Died: 1853, Boston, Mass., U.S.A.

career:

Merchant, first in London, since 1830 at Havana, and since 1832 at Boston. Evidently an amateur mineralogist, writing numerous papers on that subject. He is cited in Hooker, Species Filicum, as the collector of some Sumatra ferns. According to Dr O. Posthumus most of the cited species were not found back by others, and are partly known of the Sandwich Islands only. The latter fern specialist supposed an interchange of labels, or something of the kind, to have taken place.

T. was evidently one of W.J. Hooker’s correspondents (cf. Ann. Bot. 16, 1902, App. C., p. ccxvi) in the years 1842-43, and is mentioned in the introduction to the ‘Synopsis Filicum’ as having sent material from the East Indies (incl. the Malay Peninsula and the Malay Archipelago) to him.

J.E. Teschemacher is the author of: ‘On a new species of Rafflesia, from Manila’ (Bost. Journ. Nat. Hist. 4, 1841, p. 63-66, t. 6; reprinted in Jardin Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist. Lond. 9, 1842, p. 381-384, 1 pl.).

collections:

He received the material from Manila (coll. in Leyte, P.I.), and did not collect it himself.
