Tengwall, Tor Åke

Born: 1892, Ornsköldsvik, Sweden. Died: 1946, New York City, U.S.A.

career:

Was educated and took his Ph.Dr’s degree at Uppsala (1920), studied for some time at Utrecht University, and was subsequently on the staff of the Experiment Station for the Java Sugar Industry at Pasoeroean, E. Java (1921-26), finally in the rank of Inspector. From 1926-31 Sub-Director of the Rubber Experiment Station at Buitenzorg, from 1931-33 Leader of the Agricultural Service of the ‘Bergcultures’ in Java. In 1933 he was appointed Director of a tropical Agricultural Institute in Turkey; subsequently Director Research Dept Firestone Plantation Co. in Liberia; finally Adviser of the Rubber Division of the Board for the Netherlands Indies, Surinam and Curaçao at New York City.

Author of some plant-geographical papers.

Blechnum tengwallii Kjellb. and Vernonia tengwallii Koster were named after him.
