Born: 1733, Pitea, Norrland, Sweden. Died: 1782, London, England.

career:

Favourite pupil of Linnaeus. In July 1760 he settled in England, and was appointed Assistant Librarian of the British Museum in 1763. He accompanied Banks (see there) on Cook’s first voyage round the world, and subsequently became librarian of Banks whom he accompanied on a voyage to Iceland. Since 1773 in the employ of the British Museum again, this time as Curator of the Natural History division.

He is commemorated in the genus Solandra (auct. div.) and in some plant species.

Herb. Brit. Mus. [BM]; some dupl. in Herb. Linn. Soc. Lond. [LINN]. He collected during the sojourn in W. Java (Oct. 2-Dec. 24, 1770),¹ and apparently in other localities too.

Herb. Sydney [NSW]: some Australian plants.² The collections of his in Herb. Linnaeus, Nat. Hist. Mus. Stockholm [S], date from the Swedish period, but specimens of his from the above-mentioned voyage are present in Herb. Stockholm [S] with other herbaria.³ Dupl. indeed also in Herb. Copenhagen [C],⁴ with Herb. Vahl. His early (Swedish) collections also with Herb. Alströmer in State Mus. Stockholm [S]. Also plants in Herb. Martyn (= Cambridge [CGE]).

Plants of Banks and Solander were at the disposal of Gaertner when the latter prepared his famous books.⁵

A complete set of autographic notes of Solander made during the voyage etc. is in the Libr. Brit. Museum; unpublished drawings of the voyage in the Bot. Dept Brit. Mus. also.
